The Abbey of Notre-Dame de Leffe was founded in 1152 by Premonstratensian (Norbertine) canons on the river Meuse in the province of Namur, southern Belgium. The canons began brewing beer around 1240, providing a safe, healthy drink for guests and pilgrims during an era when waterborne epidemics made drinking water unsafe. The brewing process boiled water, killing microbes and making beer a safer alternative.
The abbey's brewery survived numerous challenges over the centuries. The Meuse River flooded the brewery in 1460, and a fire damaged the abbey six years later. By the 17th century, the brewery prospered and was enlarged and renovated. In 1796, the abbey was declared property of the state during the French Revolution, and brewing continued in limited capacity until 1809 when it was closed. During World War I, the original brew kettles were melted down for ammunition.
The modern Leffe brand was created in 1952 when Father Abbot Nys collaborated with brewer Albert Lootvoet to revive the Leffe brewing tradition, starting with a brown ale. Lootvoet's brewery was located in Overijse, Belgium. Interbrew (now AB InBev) later purchased the Lootvoet operation and incorporated Leffe into its growing portfolio of Belgian beer brands in the 1970s.
Leffe was initially brewed in Mont-Saint-Guibert until Interbrew closed that brewery. Production was then moved to the Stella Artois brewery in Leuven, where Leffe is currently brewed. AB InBev maintains a small museum opposite the abbey that can be toured from April to October.
In 2023, AB InBev lowered the ABV of UK-brewed Leffe from 6.6% to 6% to "better suit" UK drinkers. UK-brewed Leffe is now produced at AB InBev's breweries in Lancashire and south Wales, while the original Belgian-brewed Leffe continues to be produced at the Stella Artois brewery in Leuven.
